Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says no charges will be laid in connection with a Sarnia police pursuit that led to a crash between two civilian vehicles.
At around 6 a.m. on October 1, 2020, uniformed officers tried to stop a swerving vehicle, with a stolen plate, on Talfourd Street.
It's alleged the suspect vehicle fled westbound on Talfourd before turning onto Indian Road South, where it collided with another vehicle.
Both drivers, including the 27-year-old male suspect, suffered minor injuries, but a passenger in the suspect vehicle, a 56-year-old woman, fractured her pelvis.
SIU Director Joseph Martino said there was no basis to proceed with criminal charges against the officer.
He said there is nothing in the evidence to suggest that the officer operated his cruiser without due care and regard for public safety.
"I am unable to reasonably conclude that the manner of the officer's driving in the course of his pursuit of the SUV was substandard or, that if it was in any respect, that it deviated markedly from a reasonable level of care in the circumstances."
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
