Ice-breaking efforts have been halted again on the St. Clair River.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority said late Thursday that ice on Lake St. Clair has grown substantially due to the cold temperatures. Ice-breaking on the river has been stopped because the ice can't be flushed out into the lake.
The authority said water levels are going up as northerly winds push thin ice from Lake Huron into the river, and thicker ice may add to the existing ice jam making conditions worse. Winds over the coming days are expected to shift between northerly and easterly.
The wind and ice jam may cause further erosion and flooding for residents along the river.
The authority's flood watch remains in effect. Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous ice conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.
