Women's Interval Home says safety risks heightened during pandemic

The Women's Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton is reminding the community of its 24/7 support services as COVID-19 heightens safety risks for those living with abuse.

Services include emergency shelter, crisis support, counselling, safety planning, and transitional support.

Executive Director Angie Marks said the pandemic lockdown has posed significant challenges for those looking to escape an abusive relationship.

"The isolation plays a really big role in the safety risks that women and children are experiencing," said Marks. "Changes in routines are also a factor. Children are not going to school, they're not able to see their support systems such as family, friends or neighbours who are staying inside and unable to see what is happening in somebody else's neighbourhood. Typically, people may be able to hear things and be able to report them."

Marks said some "red flags" to watch out for include no longer being able to connect with a friend or family member, or them disappearing from social media.

She said you can help a victim by talking to them in a supportive manner, remaining non-judgmental, discussing how to increase their safety, and encouraging them to pack a bag of essential items.

Victims are encouraged not to confront their abuser in they're planning to leave as this could create an increased safety risk.
