SIU investigating injuries to suspect after city traffic stop

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing an incident involving Sarnia police last week.

On Tuesday, January 26, an officer arrested a suspect after a traffic stop at around 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Bright Street.

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said the 38-year-old driver exited the vehicle and became involved in an interaction with the police officer.

"Additional officers arrived and the man was arrested. In the course of the arrest, the man resisted and a struggle ensued," said Hudon in a statement. "He was eventually handcuffed and taken to the police station where he was lodged in a cell. At a later time, the man went to hospital and was diagnosed with injuries."

Three officers have been designated as subject officers and four as witness officers.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.
