Former Sarnia man facing sex charges in Calgary

A former Calgary basketball coach, originally from Sarnia, is facing several sex-related offences allegedly involving a teenager.

On January 19, following an investigation that began in November, Calgary police charged Sean Maheu, 38, with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation.

Police said a male victim alleged he had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by his coach after joining the Genesis Basketball League during the summer of 2016 when he was 14.

In a news release, police said the coach befriended the victim, often driving him to basketball games and practices, school and other locations, and that the victim also spent time at the coach's residence, where some of the assaults are alleged to have taken place.

Maheu's next scheduled court appearance out west is March 11.

A link on the Genesis Basketball webpage, which has since been removed, said Sean Maheu had been coaching youth basketball since 1998 and that he played high school basketball at the former St. Christopher's school in Sarnia.
