Driver charged after vehicle clocked at nearly 70 km/h over limit

Sarnia police say a 34-year-old man is facing stunt driving charges and a fine of up to $10,000, after being clocked at nearly 70 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit.

Police said an officer travelling east on Churchill Line near Waterworks Road Thursday, saw a vehicle travelling towards him at a very high rate of speed -- the officer clocked the driver at 159 kilometres an hour in a 90 zone.

The driver’s vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence suspended for one week, and he has to appear in court later this year.

Police say at such speeds, it's unlikely the average vehicle would be able to recover from any sort of emergency maneuver, let alone brake in time. Collisions at high rates of speed are normally catastrophic resulting in severe injuries and death.
