Emergency childcare available for some essential workers

Four licenced childcare operators have been approved in Sarnia-Lambton for emergency care next week.

The County of Lambton says childcare is being offered at no cost to eligible frontline workers whose children are between the ages of four and 12 and enrolled in school.

Children's Services Manager Melissa Fitzpatrick said the list of eligible workers is shorter than what was offered in the spring.

"The list is primarily healthcare workers, police, fire, paramedics, corrections, animal welfare, long-term care and retirement homes and employees of child care operations," said Fitzpatrick.

The four facilities offering care include; London Bridge Child Care at Holy Trinity School in Sarnia, the YMCA at St. Joseph's Corunna School, Sombra Township Child Care's Riverview School Site and North Lambton Childcare at Grand Bend Public School.

"They (parents or guardians) have to contact our children's services department, the phone number is 519-344-2062 ex. 2201. We have a simplified application, it's very short, just to confirm the essential worker status and the age of the children."

About 50 spaces are available in Sarnia and 15 at each county site.

Students enrolled in elementary schools, publicly-funded and private, will be closed to in person learning January 4 to 8 to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
