Final push for United Way campaign, shortfall likely

The 2020 United Way campaign in Sarnia-Lambton, is entering its final week.

Executive Director Dave Brown said they have some work to do to reach the $1.9-million goal.

"We've reached so far, $1,611,400, which represent 84.8 per cent of our $1.9-million needs target," he said. "I think being about $300,000 short of last year's achievement, it's unlikely of us reaching that to be honest, but we haven't given up yet -- we're still urging people who had planned to donate but haven't yet, to please do so. We do know that between Christmas and New Year's are big donation days, so we're hoping for the best."

Brown said donations began to pick up over the last week-and-a-half.

"We've had some really good news from some of our employee campaigns, like Arlanxeo, Shell and of course NOVA Chemicals. We've also had a number of smaller campaigns that are bringing in donations."

Brown has said cuts may be necessary if they fall short of goal. He says 18 local agencies are guaranteed funding until March 31, 2021.
