Cuts possible as concerns grow about United Way funding shortfall

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way may fall short of its fundraising goal during this difficult year.

Executive Director Dave Brown said $940,000 or 49.5 per cent of the $1.9-million target has been realized with less than a month to go.

"We still have a lot of challenges ahead over the next three and half weeks or so," said Brown. "We're very concerned that we're not going to reach the target for sure. I think by and large, we knew it was going to be a challenging campaign back in the springtime. We're pleased that the campaign has done as well as it has so far, but again we still have almost another month to go and there's some big campaigns still coming in yet."

The United Way helps fund 18 local agencies providing 36 programs and services to the community.

Brown said if they don't reach their goal, some cuts may be necessary.

"I doubt it would be an across the board cut," he said. "I think we will try to take a look at what agencies are most in need and try to make the best judgement that we can on the use of those campaign dollars."

Brown said so far, 2,030 donors have contributed to the campaign, far below the anticipated need of 4,200.
