Salmonella cases still rising, nine hospitalized in Sarnia outbreak

Lambton Public Health is reporting nine more lab-confirmed cases of salmonella food poisoning linked to Sarnia's Barakat restaurant, and the Barakat food truck in Corunna.

There are now a total of 33 cases and nine hospitalizations with those infected ranging in age from nine months to 73 years.

Lambton Public Health said about 170 other people have reported having an illness with symptoms similar to salmonellosis after eating at the establishments.

The health unit said 90 per cent of the exposures happened between October 21 and 25.

Initial tests of food samples came back negative for salmonella, but results of environmental swabs are still pending.

The investigation into the specific source of the outbreak is ongoing.

Lambton Public Health said the owners of the restaurant continue to cooperate, and the building remains closed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who ate at the Barakat Restaurant or food truck between October 19 and 29 and became ill with symptoms like diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and vomiting is urged to report the illness to Lambton Public Health or contact their health care provider.
