It didn't take the Town of Plympton-Wyoming long to clean up its Wyoming welcome sign after it was defaced by vandals over the weekend.
Mayor Lonny Napper said suspects used black spray paint to cross-out the town's name on the sign and write 'Petrolia' above it.
He said it's not the first case of graffiti vandalism in the town.
"It's always disturbing when that happens -- couple times a year it seems to surface again -- we just urge anybody who's seen anything happen or heard anything to notify the police. It's a nuisance to the municipality and it costs the taxpayers money, and if these young fellas are bored and they want to paint something, give me a call -- I think I can find something more proactive to paint in the town than our signs."
Napper said it could be a case of the COVID pandemic taking its toll on people.
"I guess they're trying to deliver a message of some kind, I don't know what it was but I think that, you know, we've had five months of frustration here and maybe somebody's just taking out their frustration over different things going on," he said. "I think it's a random act, so we'll just be diligent and see if we can find something and hopefully it won't happen again."
Napper added the repairs cost the municipality a couple hundred bucks.
"Maybe we should put a wall up some place and have a competition and bring them in, because there's some really good artists out there. I noticed the trains going through here, the graffiti on the sides of trains, and there's some pretty good looking artwork on there."
