A Sarnia city councillor is warning of a new scam after receiving a questionable telephone call Wednesday.
George Vandenberg said the call display said it was "Service Canada."
"It's coming in on a Sarnia number, so it looks legit," said Vandenberg. "The person that's on the phone identifies themselves as a federal officer investigator and basically want the party to return the phone call or if you're listening to the call, hit #1 to speak to a live person who then wants you to provide your name and postal code and then they say there's a file with it."
The former Sarnia police detective advises you just hang up.
"We know for a fact from before, CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and other agencies, are not going to be calling people and threatening that they're going to jail."
Sarnia police regularly warn the public not to give out any information if they receive peculiar calls.
Those concerned with a call's legitimacy are asked to research a proper contact number for the agency in question and call it to follow-up.
