West Nile virus confirmed in Lambton County

Lambton Public Health has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in the county.

The health unit said Monday that mosquitoes collected from a trap in Oil Springs on August 12 have tested positive for the virus.

It's the first positive result in the county so far this year.

No positive human cases have been confirmed yet in Lambton or in Ontario.

It's recommended residents take precautions to prevent exposure to mosquitoes and to eliminate mosquito breeding sites on their properties.

The majority of people infected with West Nile virus do not get sick. Those who do become ill usually experience mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, skin rash or muscle aches. Less than one per cent of people infected with the virus get seriously ill.
