Sarnia's mayor says it's disgraceful that the federal government hasn't come up with more money for those who depend on disability benefits under the Canadian Pension Plan.
Mike Bradley has written a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau demanding answers as to why those on disability are still capped at $1,200 a month during the pandemic when there have been many other programs put in place, like CERB, which gives people $2,000 monthly.
"If you're on disability right now, you've been capped on your income and you're not getting any additional funding," he said. "At the same time, your expenses are going up and you've got all of these other issues to deal with and you've got no assistance at all. If you look at the wide variety of groups that have been supported by the federal government, and I don't disagree with that, why have they left behind the most vulnerable people in the community?"
Bradley said this vulnerable group is the only one to be left behind. They don't have the ability to make extra money and there have been cutbacks to transportation and increased costs for medicine and food.
He said the Liberals and opposition parties couldn't agree to pass legislation for a pay increase when they discussed it last month. He said each party supported it, but there was a "partisan political brawl" and it didn't pass.
MPs were set to meet on Tuesday to discuss giving those with disabilities a one-time payment of $600.
