Errol Village class, Rosedale teacher recognized for energy conservation

For the second year in a row, a Camlachie school class is tops in the country.

The Eco Awesome Eagles at Errol Village Public School won the top prize in the annual Classroom Energy Diet Challenge (CEDC).

Despite the COVID-19 lockdown, the class scored high marks on all classroom energy conservation exercises.

The class won $2,500 and a $500 charitable donation to the Inn of the Good Shepherd was made on its behalf.

Local Grade 5/6 teacher at Rosedale Public School in Sarnia Deborah Lumley was named the 2020 Energy Educator of the Year.

The recognition is given to two teachers, one elementary and one secondary, every year for commitment to environmental education.

“My students were very excited to be part of the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge. To have their work and teacher recognized means so much,” said Lumley. “The CEDC has taught us to take action and make changes in our lifestyles. We hope that our learnings provide us with opportunities for positive change for the future.”

The Classroom Energy Diet Challenge started in 2011, supported by Shell Canada and Canadian Geographic Education.

Students compete for over 90 prizes worth a total of $40,000.
