A new crossing on Exmouth Street at the Howard Watson Nature Trail is now operational.
City Director of Engineering David Jackson said it should get lots of use.
"This crossing at Exmouth is one of the busiest crossings -- lots of traffic on Exmouth and four lanes to cross. We've heard lots over the years about concern for safety here, and so now there's a very visible crossing there, and then for the pedestrians to be able to stop traffic, it will certainly improve safety significantly."
Jackson said the one unique feature is that they added a bike-lane crossing.
"So bikes will be able to bike through this intersection, which is a little different than the pedestrian crossovers we have with flashing lights at other locations where those ones, cyclists are supposed to get off their bike and walk across."
Jackson said the crossing, which cost about $90,000, is part of a long-term plan to extend The Rapids Parkway.
"The infrastructure used here for this crossing, the poles, the traffic signal head and the controller, can all be reused as part of the full traffic signal that would be implemented there once the Rapids Parkway is fully extended."
