End in sight for unusual May cold snap

Sarnia-Lambton is enduring its fifth straight day of unusually cold May weather.

Environment Canada said a new record low temperature of -2.2 C was set early Tuesday morning at Chris Hadfield Airport.

The previous mark for May 12 was -0.6 C set in 1972.

Meteorologists have said a polar vortex pulled cold Arctic air down from the north causing the spring cold snap.

A frost advisory remained in effect with the mercury expected to drop to -4 C Tuesday night.

The good news is the temperature will finally start to moderate Wednesday with a forecast high of 14 C and a low of 8 C.

A high of 20 C, 68 F, the normal value at this time of year in Sarnia, is expected Friday, with the temperature remaining around that mark through the long Victoria Day weekend. Showers are in the forecast through the weekend, however.

Friday, May 8 was unofficially the coldest in Sarnia since 1983.
