Coldest May 8th in Sarnia in decades

Friday was the coldest May 8th in Sarnia since 1983.

The temperature at Chris Hadfield Airport struggled to just 3.2 C at mid afternoon, unofficially breaking the previous record of 4.6 C set 37 years ago.

The mercury dipped to minus 2 at the airport overnight but Sarnia was not among the municipalities setting new record lows for May 9 according to Environment Canada.

A frost advisory remained in effect for Saturday night with a low near zero forecast.

A polar vortex has drawn cold Arctic air from the north down across much of southern Ontario with unseasonably cool temperatures to continue through Tuesday of next week.

The normal high for this time of year in Sarnia is 19 C, 66 F, with lows around 7 C, 45 F.
