After years of planning, there's finally some movement at Sarnia's former Devine Street School.
Sarnia Chief Building Official Ken Barros said demolition is well underway.
"The former Devine Street School is in the process of being demolished in preparation of Sussex Retirement Living," said Barros. "They're finalizing their site plan control agreement to finalize a 190-unit seniors residence with a five and an eight-storey tower."
Barros said it will be nice to see something new in that area.
"Once they've completed their site plan control agreement, then they'll be free to apply for their full building permits for the new build."
Watford's Schouten Excavating, which handled the demolition of the former Sarnia General Hospital, started removing the old school building last week.
"I see that it's moving along quite quickly and I would anticipate they might be done this week," said Barros.
The site, at Devine and Brock Streets, has been vacant since the public school closed in 2010.
