'Lighting Our Way' awards presented by St. Clair Catholic board

A Sarnia educational assistant is being recognized by the St. Clair Catholic District School Board.

Maria DeGuzman, who works at Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School, has received the 2020 "Lighting Our Way" award, after being nominated by members of the school's staff.

The board said her colleagues credit working beside DeGuzman for changing their outlook as a teacher.

Staff wrote in their nomination, her "selfless inner spirit shines through in every word she speaks, every action she participates in and every helping hand she lends. Her quiet, reflective nature fosters a classroom where every child feels safe, cared for and included. Each day for Maria is a new day to lift someone up. She is a woman who lives a life of service, finding true meaning in the phrase, happiness is found in helping others."

Lindsay Dunlop, who teaches at Ursuline College in Chatham, also received the award.

The "Lighting Our Way" awards are normally given to recipients at the St. Clair Catholic system-wide Faith Development Day, which is held bi-annually.

It was postponed this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
