UPDATE: Workers taken to hospital after chemical exposure at Arlanxeo

Two contractors working on a Chemical Valley plant tower had to be taken to hospital after being exposed to an unknown chemical.

Arlanxeo said the two became ill several hours after conducting the work at the Vidal Street South plant on Saturday.

"As a precaution, both sought treatment at a hospital and remain under observation," the company said Wednesday morning in a statement. "The exact cause of their illness is under investigation. Two other contractors working on the same tower were checked out and released from the hospital."

The Ministry of Labour told BlackburnNews.com Tuesday that an investigation was underway after three workers were exposed to an unknown chemical.

The ministry said the workers, who were employed by Maviro Canada, were "in the process of removing trays from the inside of a tower" at the synthetic rubber company when the incident occurred.

The ministry said it was notified of the incident Monday and two inspectors have attended the scene. The investigation remains ongoing but no orders have been issued at this time.
