Province reaches deal with last of major teachers' unions

The last of four major teachers' unions has reached a tentative deal with the province.

On Monday, Ontario's Education Minister Stephen Lecce said an agreement has been reached with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.

"Our priority has always been to reach good deals with teachers' and education workers' unions, that advance the priorities of students and parents," said Lecce. "That is exactly what we have done by reaching deals with every education union in this province."

The details of the new agreement and the process for a ratification vote will be reviewed with union leaders in the coming days.

OSSTF members conducted months of rotating strikes and work-to-rule action while talks with the Ford Tories stalled over several issues, including online learning and class sizes.

The union paused strike action in early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced schools across Ontario to remain closed for the last month.

OSSTF District 10 represents 600 full time equivalent secondary teachers in Lambton-Kent.

Catholic teachers across the province, represented by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), ratified a new contract with the province earlier this month.
