Demolition work at 2 Ferry Dock Hill in Sarnia is scheduled to resume this week.
City Solicitor Sutheat Tim said the first contract was cancelled when the primary contractor didn't mobilize the required resources needed to execute the work within a specific time.
He said a new contract was awarded to a local company on March 13.
"Every permit is secured for the time being," said Tim. "The building was completely cleared, but now the next step in the demolition process would have been the abatement of asbestos contaminants inside the building now."
But, he said there have been some complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Unfortunately the abatement team that was scheduled to go in, were basically imposed in self-isolation, because of possible exposure to COVID-19. That delayed phase two, which is the abatement, which will start on April 8."
Tim expects the abatement work to take two weeks to complete.
Barring further complications, demolition is expected to be completed before May 1.
