Windy, cold first weekend of spring

After a very mild, breezy start to spring, the first weekend of the new season will be windy and cold.

Environment Canada says a strong cold front will sweep across the region Friday causing temperatures to plummet and producing wind chills of -13 C, 9 F, Friday night and Saturday morning. Wind gusts near or in excess of 90 kilometres an hour are expected. There'll be a band of scattered showers or thunderstorms in advance of the front.

A special weather statement remained in effect Friday.

The weather agency said given the scattered nature of the band, confidence in high winds gusts occurring in any given place is low but local power outages are possible in strong gusty winds.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation and may issue watches or warnings if necessary.
