The Federal Bridge Corporation is piloting a high-capacity electric vehicle charging station at the Blue Water Bridge.
Director of Communications Todd Kealey said it's conveniently located near the Duty-Free Shop in Point Edward.
"What we're doing here is trying to get a gauge of the market for electric vehicles crossing our bridges and a sense for whether this is something that we need to deploy at other locations and how fast we need to deploy it at other locations," said Kealey.
Kealey said the 25-kilowatt chargers can boost a vehicle in 15 to 30 minutes.
"It depends on the kind of vehicle that people are driving and it depends on how low their charge is. I don't have an electric vehicle myself, but what I understand is that people who do, they don't drive them the same way as a gas-powered vehicle would do, where you empty the tank or bring it down to a certain point, at which point you charge it up again. Electric vehicle drivers tend to accept any opportunity they can find to top up their vehicles so that they can keep going."
Kealey said users are required to pay through an app or tap-and-go system based on the amount of time it's used.
