Sarnia police are appealing to residents to register their security cameras.
The initiative, in partnership with Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers and Allstate Insurance, is geared toward assisting police in their investigations.
Crime Stoppers Coordinator Les Jones said the voluntary program is similar to a neighbourhood watch.
"It's a registry where homeowners or business owners that have external-facing cameras can register with the Sarnia police, just their contact information," said Jones. "If there's an incident in that area, the police will have a database that they can access, so it saves a lot of time, money and resources."
Jones said all collected data is private and will not be shared with the public.
Residents and businesses can register online through the Sarnia police website.
Officers would still require your permission to access information from your camera security system.
