Damage from a fire on New Year's Eve is pegged at $200,000.
Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to a home on Dundas Street at around 3:10 p.m.
Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said the fire was caused accidently by improperly disposing of smoking materials. He said the tenant emptied an ashtray in the kitchen garbage, left the home and returned 45 minutes later to find the house filled with smoke.
"The kitchen is completely destroyed and it did spread to the attic," said Bus.
He said improperly discarding smoking materials is the leading cause of fatal fires.
"In this case, there was nobody in the house," said Bus. But, if you do smoke, please take care of the discarded materials. Properly discard of your smoking materials in a metal container and make sure they're fully out."
