Halloween food drive set to scare away hunger

Students from Holy Rosary in Wyoming are looking to scare away hunger this Halloween.

Grade 7/8 students and parent volunteers will be canvassing the community for non-perishable food items Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon in support of the Petrolia Food Bank.

Principal Margaret DeGurse said students will not be knocking on doors, so donations can be placed in a plastic bag outside your front door before 9 a.m.

"Traditionally at Holy Rosary we've conducted a food drive at Christmas, however Mrs. Jenna Holmes, our Grade 7/8 teacher, has helped us become a WE School. So since we've become a WE School, the staff and students are taking part in the WE Campaign, and one of them is WE Scare Hunger," said DeGurse. "We're finding that this time of the year actually seems to work a little better for us. We've got more volunteer drivers over the last two years that we've done it and it's not quite as cold as it is at Christmas. Last year we were able to collect over 2,000 pounds of food."

DeGurse said their goal is to hit or surpass the 2,000 pound mark.

"If anybody would like to drop things off at the school we'd definitely take those and add it to our collection. Also the students are having an in-class competition to see who brings in the most food as well."

DeGurse said students in grade five and six will be sorting the donations before they head to the food bank.
