Nurturing empathy in young children

An internationally recognized child advocate and parenting expert will be discussing nurturing empathy in young children Thursday night in Sarnia.

Mary Gordon is the founder and president of Root of Empathy, an organization that offers empathy based programs for children.

Lambton College's Parent and Professional Resource Centre is hosting the free event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Quality Inn on Christina Street.

Centre Coordinator Kim Jackson said the workshop will celebrate the power of early educators and the pivotal role of family in building the next generation of citizens and parents.

"We know that the rates of empathy is declining, and so it's very important for educators to know what their role is and that they have an important role in helping children to build empathy," said Jackson. "The event is in recognition of early childhood educators and child care appreciation, so mostly in attendance is going to be our ECEs, so registered early childhood educators, early childhood education students, and teachers and school board officials who work in the early years sectors."

Jackson said the presentation will use videos, art, and narrative to show the power of early relationships in all domains of development, in particular, in the development of empathy.
