Global Climate Strike rally at Blue Water Bridge Friday

Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton is hosting a rally at the Blue Water Bridge in support of Friday's Global Climate Strike.

Paul Stebbins, one of about 25 members in the advocacy group established in March, said the strikes will raise awareness and call on governments to take immediate and effective action on climate change.

He said Friday's rally will show solidarity with strikes around the world, including a rally on the other side of the St. Clair River.

"We're going to have some speakers, music, and we're going to show solidarity with Port Huron on the U.S. side -- they're having a rally there basically called 'Climate Change Knows No Borders', so they'll be lined up on the other side of the Blue Water Bridge," said Stebbins. "September 20 to 27 has been identified as a week of global climate strikes calling for immediate action to counter the global climate crisis, so the rally is kind of a support for 'Fridays For Future' and global climate strikes."

Similar Global Climate Strikes, inspired by 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg, saw about four million protest on September 20.

Stebbins said Point Edward's rally will give attendees a better grasp of their role in the global climate crisis.

"Well basically attendees will possibly come away with a better understanding of the climate crisis, and they'll have a chance to connect with others, share their concerns and come away with a knowledge that they're not alone in this-- it's kind of like understanding ecological grief for some people," said Stebbins.

Friday's rally is from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Waterfront Park, while at the same time, Thunberg, a Swede who has become a global advocate for climate change, is set to appear at Montreal's climate march.

Stebbins said Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton is a group dedicated to exploring solutions to the climate crisis using impact actions to get things going. He said they've made significant progress since being founded earlier in the year.

"We held a rally on May 24, we worked with Sarnia council in terms of the city declaring a climate emergency in June, and now we're also hosting the 100 Debates event that's going on October 3, and that's that national debate across Canada where 100 cities are all going to debate the same questions with the federal candidates."
