Red Cross accepting donations in aftermath of Dorian

The Canadian Red Cross has started accepting donations for victims of Hurricane Dorian.

International Operations Manager Norah Eggleston said the Red Cross is working to coordinate emergency relief efforts and get help to people in the Bahamas as soon as possible.

"Right now the money that is raised will directly support relief efforts in the Bahamas," said Eggleston. "We do have Red Cross volunteers who were there beforehand and who are active in the response. They're already distributing items to people who have moved to Nassau and we have three planes of relief items that have already landed in the Bahamas. We have a boat that has just arrived in Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands."

Eggleston said there are several ways to donate including online at www.redcross.ca, or by calling 1-800-418-1111.

"We do know that from past experience that Canadians are among the most generous per capita when disaster strikes," she said. "We also know that many people in Canada do have connections in the Bahamas and the best way to donate is by making a donation to our appeal Hurricane Dorian and to visit our website."

Donations are also being accepted at the East Street Red Cross branch in Sarnia.
