With the start of the new school year on Tuesday, students and parents are reminded to stay safe.
Sarnia Police Cst. John Sottosanti said motorists should prepare for the change they will see on the roads.
"Keep an extra eye out especially right now, kids are all gung-ho and happy for now, they're off to school and may not be paying attention to what they're doing," said Sottosanti. "Slow down, and with school buses, if the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out, please stop."
Failure to stop for a school bus with its stop arm activated and lights flashing, can result in a fine of nearly $500 and six demerit points for a first offence.
There are high resolution stop arm cameras installed on Lambton-Kent school bus fleets to help convict drivers who fail to stop when the vehicles are picking up or dropping off children.
Cst. Sottosanti said disobeying a crossing guard stop sign carries a fine of $180 and three demerit points.
"When they're crossing, you cannot go by a guard until that person and every person that they are with has cleared the road," he said. "Please keep that in mind because that is a ticketable offence and we have been enforcing that, especially in high concern areas."
Students in the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic District school boards return to class on Tuesday, September 3.
