Suspects sought in violent assault at Canatara

Sarnia police are appealing to the public to help locate multiple suspects in an alleged attack at Canatara Park.

Cst. John Sottosanti said officers responded to the parking lot near the Canatara Bandshell at around 12:40 a.m. Monday.

"Lambton paramedics had already attended and were dealing with a 61-year-old male for injuries that he had sustained," said Sottosanti. "As the investigation continued, it was determined the victim was walking through the parking lot when he was confronted by several males that were yelling derogatory words at him. A verbal exchange of words escalated to the point where the victim was attacked by several suspects who pushed him to the ground and then kicked and punched him."

He said the suspects fled the scene, and passersby called 911 after spotting the unconscious victim.

The 61-year-old was taken to hospital, where he remains with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Cst. Sottosanti said police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on Thursday, August 29. He's charged with assault causing bodily harm and was being held pending a bail hearing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sarnia police Det. Jeff Rovers at 519-344-8861 ext 6159 or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
