Sarnia rally to protest cuts to legal aid

A rally protesting provincial cuts to legal aid is being held in Sarnia Tuesday afternoon.

Community Legal Assistance Sarnia, a not-for-profit legal clinic, will hold an information picket and free legal advice clinic outside Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey's office on Christina Street.

Executive Director Andrew Bolter said the cuts by the Progressive Conservative government affect access to justice.

"What we've seen already is cuts to refugee services, but there's also cuts generally to criminal and family legal aid so that low-income people can't really get help when they go to court or have a family law issue. Also cuts to legal clinics -- every community in Ontario has a legal clinic," said Bolter.

"Legal clinics do things like help people deal with landlord-tenant issues, help people get onto disability programs, we do human rights work, we do criminal injury compensation and those kind of things that just make it easier for low-income people to stabilize their lives -- these cutbacks are going to make it more difficult for us to do that."

Bolter is hoping that people who feel the cuts are harmful to low-income people and basically limit access to justice, will come out and show their support on Tuesday.

The rally is from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 805 Christina St.
