Alexander Mackenzie Secondary celebrating 50 years

Sarnia's Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School is welcoming back former staff and students to celebrate a milestone.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the Michigan Avenue school will be hosting a barbeque and open house in their courtyard.

Principal Jim Stewart said they have lots planned to celebrate half a century in Sarnia.

"We're just going to be barbecuing all afternoon, we're going to do a tree-planting to commemorate the 50th, as well as some other events taking place," said Stewart."People are welcome to walk through the school, we'll have some nostalgia from hopefully 50 years ago up to the present- old yearbooks and things like that will be out."

Stewart said students have been working on displays from the past and present to set up in the hallway.

"We want to give [alumni] an opportunity to reminisce, meet up with some old faces and friends, and make some connections again," said Stewart. "We still offer the same sort of programs at the school-- they may run by different names, but we still have a lot of the trades and we're still a special education-focused school. As far as the building goes, there are some changes inside, but on the outside, it's basically the same."

The free event goes June 1 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
