Inmate charged with trafficking in jail overdoses

Sarnia police have charged a prisoner in connection with multiple overdoses at Sarnia Jail Friday.

Three inmates and a guard were transported to Bluewater Health with symptoms believed to be from exposure to a powdered opioid.

Cst. John Sottosanti said it's highly possible that it was fentanyl but that's yet to be confirmed pending Health Canada analysis.

He said jail authorities are investigating how the substance was brought into the facility.

"That's their system in regards to what they have to do. Just as if something were to come into our station it would be us that would investigate why did it come into our cells," he said.

Sottosanti said all four of the victims have since been released from hospital.

"Obviously it's a very hazardous substance. In this case, here it could've been more serious-- we could have had deaths," said Sottosanti. "But fortunately due to the quick reaction of emergency workers they were able to ensure that everyone survived."

Todd Wayne Campbell, 30, is charged with possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody.
