Local hockey coach named OMHA coach of the month

A local coach has been named the Ontario Minor Hockey Association's coach of the month for March.

Ross Carlton of the Mooretown Flags Atom boys team was nominated for the award by a parent.

He said it's a huge honour to be recognized for his work with the nine and ten-year-olds.

"It's always nice to get a bit of a pat on the back from the parents in particular, and the guys that you coach with," said Carlton. "It shows that you're doing the right thing, and putting the kids in the right spots. To put in the effort that I do all of the time, it's nice to get some recognition."

Carlton said it's important to get every kid involved and engaged in the game.

"It's huge for kids this age to start to play as a team," he said. "At this stage a lot of the time there are one or two kids that can sort of do it all. I want to promote the team aspect going forward. It will help them years down the line knowing that you can't skate through everybody anymore and it's important that the kids play together as a team as opposed to individually."

The Flags finished at the top of the league standings during the regular season with a record of 16-2-2.

They capped it off with a regional Silver Stick win before being beaten in the semi-finals of the OMHA playoffs.

Overall, the team played to a 37-10-3 mark.
