Liberal budget falls short: Sarnia-Lambton MP

Sarnia-Lambton's Conservative MP is concerned the Trudeau government's pre-election budget further balloons the deficit while doing little for healthcare.

Marilyn Gladu said a lot of public money is being spent on interest payments.

"Essentially you've got $20 billion deficits next year and the year following, and deficits in perpetuity," said Gladu. "That means you're paying $26 billion every year for interest on the debt, and think what we could do with that."

As the critic for health in PC Leader Andrew Sheer's shadow cabinet, Gladu questioned the Liberals' spending priorities.

"They've given $10 million a year for dementia, so while I would agree that there's a huge need because we've got an ever increasing number of people with dementia, I would say $10 million is not really adequate. And if we look at what they did for the opioid crisis, they've given an additional $6 million to buy safe drugs for the drug addicts, no money for recovery, no money talking about prevention."

Gladu said she's also disappointed that there's nothing for pharmacare other than $35 million allocated for a national drug agency to streamline the drug approval process.

She added there's little for seniors beyond some enhancement of the guaranteed income supplement for those with low income, and money for broadband internet in the budget is pushed out to 2028.
