The City of Sarnia has received a grant to develop a municipal climate change adaptation plan.
Acting Director of Community Development Services and Standards Tammie Ryall said the Federation of Canadian Municipalities will provide up to $125,000 over a two year period.
"We'll be looking at the trends for the change in climate, looking at if we are going to be having more extreme weather events and more precipitation and then we'll be coming up with actions for how do we adapt to that change in climate," said Ryall.
The outcome will recommend changes to the city's strategic plan, official plan, zoning bylaw, site plan approval processes and infrastructure/asset management.
"It could be a whole range of things to deal with increased precipitation, for example, we could be looking at additional stormwater management solutions, we could be looking at downspout discontinuation and backwater valves to prevent basement flooding," said Ryall.
The city will use the funding to dedicate staff to the project.
Sarnia was one of 59 small to mid-sized municipalities across Canada to receive funding to help address staffing gaps to create a plan.
