Sarnia police were able to defuse a dangerous situation Tuesday afternoon, using a Taser to bring a distraught woman under control.
Cst. John Sottosanti said they received numerous calls at around 2:30 p.m. that a woman was walking into traffic on busy Exmouth Street, west of Indian Road.
"Upon arrival of officers, a witness directed them to behind a building where the female was located," said Sottosanti. "The female was observed to be sitting in a garden and in an agitated and distressed state, crying, yelling and swearing at herself. As officers approached the lady, they observed that she appeared to have cut her wrists and was also noted to be holding a box cutter."
Cst. Sottosanti said officers tried to calm the 40-year-old woman, asking her to put the knife down, but she became more agitated and directed her anger towards them.
He said an officer used his Taser to subdue the woman as she approached them, still holding the knife.
She was taken to hospital for treatment of her self inflicted wounds and mental health assessment.
Police said no charges will be laid.
