Lambton Public Health is reminding us to take precautions while shovelling snow and clearing ice, and to provide support for those who need it.
Health Promoter Jennifer Graham said their Community that Cares campaign, launched in 2018, encourages local residents to help our aging population.
"So the campaign is about volunteering and giving back, and how everyone in our community has something they can contribute to make it a better place," she said. "We do know that community members expressed a need for snow removal and support when they were interviewed and surveyed."
Graham said Sarnia-Lambton's aging population is expected to grow from 21 per cent to 32 per cent by 2036.
She said they also have a full page of snow removal tips, like clearing snow as soon as possible before it becomes packed and wet.
"It's also important to remember to stretch because shovelling is a form of exercise," she said. "You'll want to take things slow and easy -- your body is already working to stay warm out in the cold, so you don't want to overexert it by trying to lift too much too fast."
She also said it's very important to take breaks and push the snow instead of lifting it.
Last week after a winter storm that brought snow and ice, a 75-year-old Sarnia man with a heart condition, died after reportedly collapsing and being found hours later.
