Former Sting Carcillo in town for peer support gathering

Sarnia area hockey players and family members who've experienced harassment, bullying and abuse will gather for a special peer support meeting Friday night.

Former Sarnia Sting Daniel Carcillo, who went on to a career in the NHL, plans to share his story and offer support to victims.

Carcillo went public in November, claiming he was abused and demeaned on a daily basis by veteran players in hazing incidents during his rookie season with the Sarnia Sting in 2002-2003.

"When Daniel came out publicly a few months ago, he received a lot of feedback from people in this community, who'd experienced similar things and he felt responsible for trying to help them to find a way to a healthier state of mind," said Brian White, who's helping organize the event hosted by the Male Ally Coalition.

White says mental health professionals will be available to help connect victims with the services available.

The event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre on College Avenue.

It's free and no spectators or media will be present.
