Winning tickets a loss for alleged thief

Sarnia police have arrested a 20-year-old man after he allegedly got a friend to try to cash in stolen scratch lottery tickets.

After buying tickets at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday from a gas bar on Indian Road, police allege the suspect returned at 6:40 p.m. and ran out the door with number of tickets without paying.

Police said the suspect met up with a friend and asked him to cash in the winning tickets that had been stolen.

The friend was initially arrested but was unconditionally released later.

Further investigation led officers to a Devine Street home where the suspect was arrested.

He was being held pending a bail hearing on charges of theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with probation.
