Mild start to the flu season

Flu cases locally are down compared to this time last year.

There have been 19 confirmed cases of the flu in Sarnia-Lambton, compared with 60 last January.

Lambton Public Health Supervisor Erin Courtney said we also haven't experienced any long-term care home outbreaks so far this season.

Courtney said the predominant circulating A strain is H1N1, which tends to target young children and younger adults.

"Our cases that we do have, we're seeing it all across the board, so all ages," said Courtney. "Almost all of the cases that we have received, almost all are the pandemic H1N1 strain, which is in the flu shot. So, for those who were immunized, the flu shot was a great protection this year."

There were 107 lab-confirmed cases of influenza and three flu-related deaths in Sarnia-Lambton last flu season.

Courtney said since there hasn't been a large spike in the number of confirmed cases, it's not too late to get the flu shot, which is available at 32 area pharmacies.

Residents are reminded to continue to prevent the spread of the viruses by washing hands with soap frequently, keeping ill family members home from school or work and clean regularly touched surfaces including door handles and computer keyboards.
