Special Olympics Sarnia hosts hoops tournament

Special Olympics Sarnia is hosting its first annual basketball tournament Saturday.

The Sarnia Heat's D and D-Rec teams will be facing squads from London, LaSalle, Tillsonburg, and Woodstock.

Community Coordinator Tana Manchester said their teams have improved greatly since starting in 2017.

She said they started with 22 athletes and now have over 40 taking part.

"We've gone to a couple of invitational tournaments in other communities," said Manchester. "So, we decided that since we have a couple of years under our belt we wanted to host one here. It makes it nice for our athletes to play in their home town and have family and friends come and cheer them on."

Manchester said the basketball team couldn't run without help from coaches and volunteers.

The tournament is being held at St. Patrick's Highschool from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 26.

Anyone with questions about Special Olympics Sarnia can visit them on Facebook.
