Henderson closing in on Weir's record

With the 2019 golf season now underway, Canadian Brooke Henderson is set to overtake Mike Weir as the country's most decorated golfer.

The 21-year-old Henderson has seven career LPGA Tour victories, just one shy of the Canadian record for most professional wins held by Weir, George Knudson and Sandra Post.

Both Weir and Henderson began their 2019 seasons Thursday, but it's fair to say that their golfing careers are heading in different directions.

Henderson picked up two more titles in 2018 and had 11 top-10 finishes-- she now has seven tournament victories since 2015. The Smith Falls native was also named CP female athlete of the year in both 2017 and 2018.

Weir competed in six PGA events, six tournaments on the Web.com Tour and one event on the European Tour in 2018. The Bright's Grove native made just three cuts among the 13 tournaments-- his last pro victory came in 2007 at the Fry's Electronics Open.

Henderson teed off at 9:50 a.m. Thursday at the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in Florida-- she currently ranks 9th in the world among female golfers.

Weir teed off at noon Thursday at the Desert Classic in California. The 48-year-old, who was once ranked inside the top 10 in the world golf rankings, currently sits at 1,693.
