Busy 2019 for Sarnia Fire prompts safety reminder

A busy start to the year has prompted a reminder from Sarnia Fire and Rescue.

So far in 2019, city firefighters have battled three structure fires. Luckily though nobody has been injured in each case.

Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said the theme for this year is common sense fire safety.

"We want to make sure that you properly discard of your smoking materials and put them in a metal container. Make sure you have working smoke and CO alarms, and don't leave any cooking unattended," said Bus. "The two major causes of fires are unattended cooking and improperly discarding of smoking materials, and we've already seen both cases this year."

Bus said as the temperature drops, more homeowners will be trying to stay warm using wood-burning fireplaces and electric space heaters.

He said these devices pose a risk, especially if you're not using them correctly.

"Space heaters are good for heating your home, but you have to make sure that you use them properly," said Bus. "Plug them into an outlet, not an extension cord, and make sure you have a one-metre clearance from the heater itself."
