Two large building permits last month pushed Sarnia's construction pace ahead of last year.

A $5.6 million permit was issued by city hall for a four-storey apartment building at 241 Wellington St. Vision Nursing and Rest Home is expanding.

There was also a $3 million partial permit for foundation work at the site of a new residential high-rise at the former Sarnia Gazette property at 275 Front St. N.

The 58 permits issued in September total $16.6 million, and lift the year-to-date total to $70 million, with one quarter to go.

At this time last year, the total was $68.5 million.

Only six permits for single-family homes were issued in September for a total of 71 so far this year, compared to 82 last year.
