Captain Ryan McGregor scored 65 seconds into the overtime period, and the Sarnia Sting stayed perfect.
The Sting are now the only undefeated team in the OHL West Division, sitting in first place after a 2-1 overtime win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Saturday night at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
Sting associate coach David Legwand liked the effort shown by the captain and his teammates.
"He's been great. He's playing huge minutes and he's got a huge role on our team. He's a leader on and off the ice. Adam Ruzicka was good tonight and we won with a full team effort."
Cullen McLean scored for the Hounds at 6:01 in the first period, and that would be the only goal action in the first 20 minutes. The Sting outshot Sault Ste. Marie in the opening frame 12-8.
It took until late in the second period, but Sarnia provided the equalizer with Adam Ruzicka's third goal of the season. The score was 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.
There was no scoring in the third period, forcing the overtime. The Hounds outshot the Sting 10-9 in that frame. The Sting had the only two shots on goal in the overtime period, with one of them being McGregor's overtime winner.
Jamieson Rees assisted on both Sting goals.
Legwand also had praise for rookie netminder Ethan Langevin who made 24 saves for his first career OHL win.
"He played well. You know he hadn't played in a while and we want to keep everyone fresh and keep everyone game sharp. He did a heck of a job tonight coming in after not playing for two or three weeks."
Matthew Villalta had 39 saves in net for Sault Ste. Marie.
The Sting will take on the Attack Wednesday night in Owen Sound.
