Take Back the Night marks 25 years

When the first "Take Back the Night" event was held in Sarnia 25 years ago, tackling sexual violence was at the top of the "to do" list.

Now, Sexual Assault Survivors' Centre Executive Director Michelle Batty said they're focusing on human trafficking.

"Many people do not realize how much human trafficking is actually occurring in all of our communities," said Batty. "Most people think of it as an international issue, but domestic human trafficking is happening at an increasingly alarming rate."

She said more than 90 per cent of Canada's victims come from within our borders, with 55 per cent of young people meeting their trafficker via texting or social media.

Thursday's event begins at 7 p.m. at the Peace Court at Christina Street and Lochiel Street and everyone is invited.
